"It's over, Kristen. I am an inevitable force of nature. Your monastic order and withering government are about to be history!"
―Xerin Hedashield[src]

Xerin Hedashield is the overarching antagonist in Across the Portal: Interference and Across the Portal: Insurgence. She reappears as both the tritagonist and main antagonist of Across the Portal: Intuition. When she was young, she founded the Third Order with Darth Mutialatus as her right-hand man, rising to absolute power as the Supreme Leader of her organization. A mistress of the Force and a seeker of arcane lore, Hedashield possessed the knowledge and power that made her the undisputed herald over all of Der Erebolten. Although she was a self-trained mistress of the dark side of the Force, Hedashield was not a member of the Sith Order, which would have been exterminated had it not been for the actions of Darth Bane. Xerin spent her entire life enacting her plan to terminate the Galactic Republic and instill in its place a government she presided over, not seeking power for the sake of power but rather to prevent the Republic from gaining complete control over all life and endangering it on a galaxy-wide scale, as it had done to her homeworld of Vrean. Like the Sith, she regarded the Jedi Order as a threat to her plans and sought to complete their destruction whilst pursuing her more pressing agenda. Before her campaign could succeed, however, Hedashield and her armies were finally defeated by the Pearian Kristen and repentant Jedi Padawan B'en'jamin Thorrn, resulting in Hedashield's demise.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Eccentric childhood[]

Xerin Hedashield was born on Vrean in 168 BBY. She was sensed by the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Mutialatus, shortly after her birth. Since she was a small child, she created wondrous gadgets which she usually kept to herself, a hobby she would carry into adulthood. During her elementary school years, Hedashield was an athletic and decidedly adorable girl with a strong passion for sports.

However, the stress of enrolling in junior high, coupled with her being at puberty age, caused Hedashield to gradually lost her interest in sports and become addicted to eating sweets, which she sometimes stole from her father. Other students noticed that by the time seventh grade was over she was undoubtedly gaining weight. Nevertheless, the increasingly sedentary teenager had lost none of her good looks or brilliance.[1]

Devastation of Vrean[]

"The Republic will suffer as Vrean has suffered. As my family has suffered. I will organize a third order of leadership on a galactic scale, a benevolent and healthy order. I will restore our world. And I will put an end to this poisoned government."
―Xerin Hedashield gazing upon her parents' corpses[src]

Xerin unconditionally loved her family and desperately sought to save them when the entire planet became threatened by a deadly plague. Xerin was granted special permission to accompany the Vreanan Senator, Chalatos, as he moved to call upon the Galactic Senate to interfere, bringing the teenager with him to Coruscant. She climbed into the Senate pod with Chalatos, which quickly whisked them into the spacious Senate chamber. They listened in as the Senators began conversation on the petition Chalatos made to save Vrean from its doom. However, a Senator cut them off and proposed they discuss an allegedly more potent issue, the customization of the floating pods on which the Senators congregated upon on a regular basis, leading to a heated argument between several alien species. Apalled that they were “wasting their time on chairs”, Xerin was disgusted, coming to deduce that the politicians were so worried about their own comfort that they always missed the bigger problems for everyone, an idea enforced by her early geography classes in primary school. She began loudly venting to Chalatos, who became embarrassed and sent her away and ensured her parents knew what had happened. Upon returning home, Xerin reflected on how her parents had told her that the Republic wasn't putting a ban on alcholism solely because it meant doctors were making a great amount of money, making her pent-up rage even stronger.

Xerin Hedashield discovers the state of her parents on her devastated homeworld.

A few days later, Xerin's fears were proven valid when Vrean became devastated, leaving three quarters of the population deceased, claiming the lives of nine billion inhabitants. A band of athletes figured out how to stop the plague from spreading via sheer muscle, a process of which Xerin never explicitly learned about. Three days after the plague ended, Xerin finally found her parents, dead and rotting. Overcome with horror and rage, Hedashield privately swore to avenge her people and especially her family by creating a new government and finding a way to destroy the Republic and save the galactic population from themselves. She was eventually adopted by a rich man named Gentery who saved her life by implanting cybernetic bands in her head to stabilize the flow of blood in her body. He got her in a high-quality school, where she did everything she could to help the dwindling population adjust and recuperate.

As a result of Vrean's mutilation and the circumstances surrounding it, Xerin came to believe that the Galactic Republic had forgotten their place — they existed to protect the galaxy's citizens, not to control them. Xerin irrationally blamed herself for the incredible devastation, reasoning that if she had never stopped exercising and controlling her diet, she would have been strong enough to save Vrean. Hence, to save other planets from Vrean's fate, and to avenge her family, Xerin began seeking arcane and ancient lore and scheming to create the Third Order, an organization determined to bring glory to the galaxy through her own rule, as she sought to order things according to her own judgement and end the Republic she believed was toxic and would never change in adherence to her ideology.[1]

Bonding with Vlaire[]

Xerin's tragedy gravely embittered her, but due to her exceptional acting skills, she was able to convince nearly everyone that she was still an innocent, polite, brilliant, and adorable model student who was aspiring to become a scientist.

During her junior high education, she befriended a girl named Vlaire, a girl who, like Hedashield, was ambitious and was good at projecting a "sweet little girl" facade. She came to love Hedashield with a passion, and while she appreciated Vlaire in turn, she felt no real emotional attachment to her. The two spent a lot of time together and enjoyed initiating numerous "nasty incidents" that happened throughout their time at school that the authorities were never completely able to link to them. The two often had philosophical conversations when they were alone.[1]

It was around this time that she came into regular contact with Darth Mutialatus and told him of her plans, of a new order that she was planning to create, which she decided on the fly would be known as the Third Order. Because Hedashield could not resist linking her future organization with the Order of the Sith Lords, and Mutialatus saw her potential to amass vast resources to help them both profit, Mutialatus promised to serve her the moment she located an ideal base of operations.[2]

Birth of the Third Order[]

Der Erebolten[]

Two months after their promises to each other, Hedashield somehow discovered a science tower on a planet called Der Erebolten and decided it would suffice for the Third Order's headquarters. She took her droids and they fled to the science tower just before sunrise.[1]

Safe in the science tower, Xerin began making her lifelong dream a reality, starting by recruiting individuals in high places, who in turn helped her recruit many officers, nobles and technologists, who all fled with her to Del Erebolten. Most of her soon-to-be followers would have likely perished while crossing this uncharted realm if it had not been for the ancient hyperspace trails blazed by a retinue of mute alien navigators that believed Hedashield's views were right and superior to those of the current Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. Together, these rogues based on Del Erebolten and served Darth Mutialatus, who acted on Hedashield's orders thus creating the Third Order. While Mutialatus gave most of the orders and generally appeared to be in charge, Hedashield closely monitored him, telling him what to do and what orders to give, and essentially becoming the Supreme Leader of her organization. A mistress of the Force and a seeker of arcane lore, Hedashield possessed the knowledge and power that made her the undisputed herald over all of Der Erebolten, including a cult of loyalists to the Sith religion that had been present long before her arrival. However, upon her rise to power and up until the Skirmish on Umbara, Hedashield never gave anyone even the slightest indication of her origins.[2][1]

Xerin Hedashield also founded a relatively formal organization called the Grabbers, a band of mercenaries subordinate to the Third Order. Yaxa became an Admiral to the Order, but according to Darth Mutialatus, he was formally stripped of this rank due to his incompetent nature.[3]

Completing her education[]

Xerin, however, still attended high school while presumably operating the Third Order on the side. Apparently, she attended the same high school as the Omnipotent One. When he was ill and in need of an antidote, Hedashield came to his aid.[3] She brought him an exceptionally complex array of treatment materials that he needed. It is possible that she created them herself. This made him very fond of her.[1]

She had spent less than a week in the tower when the droids finished building her consumption speeder. Xerin drove it to the store, where it sucked out all the candy and soda and they stacked themselves neatly on the shelves inside the speeder's giant box. She drove home, undetected, as everyone in the store ran amok, having no idea what had happened. These acts of terror were carried out for her own sensitive pleasure and to invoke fear. On Der Erebolten, the box implanted itself into the wall, effectively becoming her food shelf.

There were only two weeks of school left, during which time Xerin made another grocery store plunder in the same city as the first. At this point, she chose to abandon all restraint and gorge herself whenever she wanted, as her barbaric yet effective methods ensured she had a virtually unlimited amount of food, particularly candy. Subsequently, Xerin came to school wearing a colorful crop top nearly every day now, since she didn't feel like changing. Every day she would wake up, gorge herself on candy, board her speeder, and park discreetly at high school. On her last day of school, she said a tearful goodbye to Vlaire, but she apparently had never told her about the Third Order, as she lied about why her body had filled out even more. Hedashield returned to her headquarters, promising to stay in touch via Holobook. However, while Vlaire indeed tried to contact her several times, Hedashield never responded to any of her attempts to reach out to her, effectively severing contact with her best friend. She also began posting what Vlaire called edgy content on her social media before becoming inactive within twelve months of her graduation.[1]

The revolution is born[]

"If I decide to test a general's loyalty and see if they should be made a trusted being of high rank, I will have a crack squad of stormtroopers standing by in case the answer is no."
―Xerin Hedashield[src]

After school, Xerin Hedashield returned to her headquarters, remaining secluded within its walls and rarely leaving except on special errands. This was mainly because she was aware that no one in the Third Order was genuinely loyal to her as a person, instead turning their loyalty entirely to the cause itself, making her think they could care less about what happened to her. While she found her life to be very enjoyable, she was also extremely lonely, starving for somebody's company but having no idea who to trust. Hedashield was extremely selective about who was allowed in her chamber and when she did permit someone she always ensured that she dominated the entire affair. She spent most of her time sleeping or entertaining herself with computerized technology, and this, combined with her awful dieting, caused her to gain a lot of weight over the next ten years.[2] Because she was incapable in close-range combat, she always kept an illegally modified blaster under her pillow on her bed.[3]

Through the many pawns afforded to her that had previously flocked to her world, Hedashield spent the next few years before the Conflict of the Numbers gathering followers in beings who called themselves, collectively, members of the Third Order. Some were supportive of her cause to dominate the Republic; while others were greedy for domination, wealth and fame; and yet others joined the Supreme Leader out of fear. As stated before, Hedashield never got too close to any of them out of distrust, and few had ever seen her in person. She personally met with new members who showed particular promise, although this was rare. According to the Wraith, Hedashield's pawns also used tricks, blackmail, and counterfeit conscription to get people to willingly join the Order.[2]

When intelligence discovered the Order's headquarters were on Der Erebolten, Abbott and his crew took it upon themselves to infiltrate the Dark Tower there. Xerin Hedashield became aware of this, remaining in the Room of Concealment, knowing it was the most unreachable part of the complex and it was her they were seeking. Although his friends were wiped out, Abbott miraculously survived everything he went up against and successfully got to her. He challenged the Supreme Leader to single combat. With two slashes of her arms, Hedashield dented his sword and violently hurled him against the base of the Dark Tower, forcing Abbott to flee and effectively ending the battle.[3]

Further preparations[]

Three years after her encounter with Abbott, she learned from Saint Pyro that a Pearian may appear in the galaxy at some point in the near future. Believing a Pearian would be very useful in her plans of galactic domination, Hedashield ordered Pyro's slaughter, as she hoped to destabilize St. Pyro's Center for Militarized Sciences. While Pyro's assassination was successful, she failed to end the science program, as Pyro, in his dying breaths, placed a scientist named R'ockienc in charge.[3][4]

In the second-last month of 141 BBY, Xerin Hedashield briefly met Julian, who she had personally promoted by appearing on an audio beacon. She also recruited Captain Cole to her cause, but her first meeting with Cole caused her to become extremely conscious of her own corpulence, making her consider some life-threatening means of weight loss.[1] Still having these thoughts seven months later, Hedashield approached Julian herself, leading to the two developing a special bond and her becoming more comfortable with her weight, at least to the extent of not threatening her own life to lose it.[1] She also personally recruited General Gore at some point.[3]

Galactic conquest[]

Discovery of a Pearian[]

When she was twenty-eight years old and less than a year after befriending Julian, Xerin Hedashield learned that a Pearian had appeared on Coruscant. She learned that the Pearian, whose name was Kristen, was being accompanied by a Jedi Padawan named B'en'jamin Thorrn, and she sent Yaxa and fellow Grabber Marion to capture the children and bring them unharmed to the science tower to be questioned by Darth Mutialatus. Upon learning of their failure from Mutialatus via comlink, Hedashield ruthlessly arranged for their private execution by General Gore. Somehow, she acquired an exotic marble owned by Jedi Master Yoda and entrusted to a Jedi Knight. Owning the marble confirmed that Kristen and Thorrn were to follow the individual.

In the mix, Hedashield began seeking out an apprentice for Darth Mutialatus on the Holonet, which her access to was all but unlimited. Several individuals volunteered, finding this idea an honor. Hedashield was particularly impressed by a small Twi'lek boy named Thomas Slovak, though she accepted the fact that the choice was entirely up to Mutialatus. She chose not to reveal this to him until the time was right, further alluding to her undeniably strong patience.[3]

The marble mystery[]

Immediately after the Grabbers' deaths, Xerin Hedashield took off in her personal speeder to seek out Kristen and B'en'jamin Thorrn herself, believing that disclosing information whilst leaving out the essentials would earn their trust. She tracked them to an isolated field where they were hiding from the Third Order (albeit ignorant to what the Order was). Thorrn immediately showed her a vintage necklace made of Phrik, which she was glad to hear more about, but Kristen told her about the marble entrusted to them by Yoda. Thorrn developed an instant crush, while Kristen was wary of Hedashield (though she was currently suspicious of everyone).

They arrived at Xerin's apartment, where Hedashield brought Thorrn upstairs with her, wishing to speak with them separately in order to give them information they would find incredibly useful whilst cleverly withholding the essentials. When they entered her bedroom, Hedashield changed into her bedclothes and offered Thorrn a snack, before questioning his knowledge of the prophecy of the Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force. Hedashield also revealed that she knew how Kristen appeared in a galaxy far, far away, something she claimed he did not yet need to know. Xerin then interrogated B'en, wanting to know about the Chosen One who was allegedly destined to bring balance to the Force. B'en, however, did not find this likely, though Xerin thought otherwise, she could find no backup to this claim, so she dropped the subject and they prepared to leave. B'en told her a joke about space slugs and in turn, she told him a joke about neebrays.

They returned to the playplace and Xerin picked up Kristen, dropping B'en off. In her room, she realized that Kristen was incredibly curious, so Hedashield spoke to her fluently to explain everything she wanted to know in a levelheaded way. Kristen learned that a failed experiment of St. Pyro's Center for Militarized Sciences intending to learn how to travel outside the galaxy has resulted in her abduction. Hedashield pointed out that the leader of the laboratory beckoned her several times. She chided Kristen for not answering, who shrugged her off by asking what Pearians were. When Xerin claimed it was a great mystery, Kristen asked how to return to Earth. Xerin told her to seek out the mysterious and all-powerful Omnipotent One.[3]

Tracking the Pearian[]

Intrigued by both of the children, Hedashield followed them downstairs and offered them the opportunity to spend the night with her. Both of them obliged. Thorrn seemed to bond with Hedashield during this time, and when daylight came, Hedashield allowed the children to borrow a speeder and gave them advice on how best to get offworld again. Thorrn begged Hedashield to come with them, catching her off guard by tenderly holding her hand, and while she acted touched by this, she let go of his hand and returned upstairs.

Following this event, on Hedashield's orders the Third Order ambushed the children on several fronts, but they proved nearly impossible to capture, even by Mutialatus himself.[3] Feeling irritable, Hedashield sent out a messenger to find a lanky, worm-like creature already in her services and tell him to meet her deep in a mine on Der Erebolten so he could tell her of the Pearian myths.[2]

Revelation[]

"Our time is not far away at all."
―Xerin Hedashield[src]

A couple days later, Darth Mutialatus spoke with Xerin Hedashield, and they agreed that two Grabbers would not be enough to try again. Concurrently, Mutialatus dispatched ten Grabbers to capture the children on Geonosis. Their mission was a success, but the children fought their way out of their bonds and through the fortress, impressing Hedashield, who was watching them via security camera, with their fighting prowess.

Shortly afterwards, she was approached by Captain Cole, who had brought the two children to mask his disenchantment and plan to betray and murder her. Hedashield responded by projecting a shield between herself and her enemies. As if out of nowhere, Darth Mutialatus appeared and killed Captain Cole. Shocked and overcome by agonizing pain, Cole falls to the ground in front of Hedashield. Infuriated that Hedashield was not any less indifferent regarding Cole's unexpected demise, Thorrn challenged her to a duel.

In response, Xerin reached under her pillow and grabbed a blaster concealed under it. Standing up, she prepared to incapacitate Thorrn, as the last thing she wanted was to kill him. Suddenly, Cole used his Force powers to teleport the children away from the apartment and to safety, Hedashield could only watch as they twisted out the window. As Cole's life ebbed away, Hedashield seethed with fury at the loss of two valuable assets to her plans as well as her Captain.

Just then, General Gore arrived in the room. Hedashield quietly expressed her doubt that B'en'jamin Thorrn is the Chosen One. Disappointed in Mutialatus for failing to stop Cole or foresee the latter's intent, Hedashield resolved to punish him soundly when she was no longer exhausted and when the two were alone. Hedashield decided that soon, she would risk coming out of the shadows to lead the Third Order, which was now public knowledge, to victory. However, the knowledge that this meant she could hire more able soldiers without fear of exposure or disloyalty comforted her. She took this chance to tell the Dark Lord of her Holonet campaign to find him an apprentice. She arranged to work alongside Mutialatus, an extension of her plan to expose herself before the Dark forces. His back turned, Mutialatus claimed that the Third Order was ready to prove to the Jedi Order that they existed. Xerin contradicted him, assuring him that the time to expose their conquest is not far away at all. In spite of her disappointment at this turn of events, Hedashield hopefully awaited the day that Thorrn would be claimed.[3]

The start of open warfare[]

"We will fight for thee!"
"Swear to it! Make an unbreakable oath!"
"We will die for the Supreme Leader!
"
―The Viceroy and the Supreme Leader[src]

With the Third Order struggling to keep their actions silent from the peering eyes of the Jedi Order, Xerin Hedashield ordered the initiation of several casualties. Many innocent lives were claimed and two planets were completely obliterated. The Conflict of the Numbers had officially begun. Fed up with the failures of her followers, Hedashield had finally grown tired of the lack of progress in her crusade and decided to take matters into her own hands. Hedashield also put her life on the line for an Enitaf, unintentionally procuring his loyalty. He ultimately replaced Captain Cole in the ranks of the Third Order. Hedashield also promoted the candidates from earlier to become the Circle of Serenity, enlisting Julian to be her direct and personal bodyguard. Several planets fell under the influence of the Third Order, while others such as Malastare rebelled, though Malastare found it unwise to contest the Order directly.

Before she tortured Mutialatus for failing her, she decided to preserve his trust and energy long enough to send him to Alderaan to force its inhabitants to forge several powerful war machines before massacring half the planet. Mutialatus' crusade lasted for five months. In the meantime, Xerin became even more sedentary and her once sproadic overeating became very frequent either from the stress of leading a war or much more commonly from celebratory overindulgences from the progress the Third Order was making that could last for days, leading to her getting even fatter and her stomach expanding even further out than before.

At some point, Xerin also went to a party where tens of thousands of people from all over the galaxy as part of a ruse. No one knew she was a member of the Third Order yet and those who did would be found and punished subtly since nobody could prove it just by looking at her. The celebration was a blast. Few people there had skimpy clothes on and Xerin was wearing one of her bras, which she got a lot of attention for. More than once she was asked if she was single but she patiently explained that males "don't work for her" and she was just inactive. Four days later, several disappearances were reported because people had recognized her as the Supreme Leader. A year after the war began, the Third Order was ready to attack the Jedi Temple outright.[2]

Preparing for the end[]

Upon learning of his return from Alderaan, Xerin Hedashield realized Darth Mutialatus had massacred a huge portion of the planet's population, which she had not ordered him to do. Bitterly recalling the Devastation of Vrean and how much it had traumatized her, she demanded Darth Mutialatus' presence by contacting him by using the Force to animate a rock, furiously telling him to come to Der Erebolten and see her in person. In light of her apprentice's failure at the hands of two children, coupled with the murder of Captain Cole, Hedashield's faith in Mutialatus' power began to waver. Whhen he arrived, she proceeded to chastise him and incapacitate him with a blast of Force lightning that caused him to roll around on the floor in agony.[2] Being absolutely traumatized by the correlation she saw between Alderaan and Vrean, she had accidentally let her powers out of control, leaving two electric bands around Mutialatus' body for the course of ten hours.[1] Hedashield believed the unintentionally conjured bands of energy served him right for his indiscriminate genocide. She must've used this brutal reprimand as a way to motivate her apprentice. If that was the case, then it worked: Darth Mutialatus immediately began preparing the Third Order military for what appeared to be their final victory.

Eventually, Xerin Hedashield ordered Myddd to launch an assault on Orenbach's Observatory after she learned the Galactic Republic had a strong presence there. To make matters better, Kristen was in the facility. The attack proved successful and the Republic presence was eliminated from Tatooine.[2]

Meeting B'en'jamin Thorrn[]

"But the Jedi teach that only lords of the Sith deal in absolutes, that truth depends on a point of view and is never absolute, basically taught that you should essentially rejoice in someone dying a painful death, that you should not have any attachments to family or loved ones. If taken to its logical conclusion, this implicitly condones killing your master or Padawan simply to ensure you don't give in to any attachments at all."
"And to think... I once yelled at someone that Rumberus would never lay a hand on me..."
"Exactly. To them, caring for the well being of others to such an extent that you're willing to save them from death should it be within your ability means you're essentially a greedy monster, among other things.
"
―Xerin Hedashield and B'en'jamin Thorrn[src]

Eventually, B'en'jamin Thorrn decided to ask Hedashield for a rank in the Third Order, as he intended to glean useful information from her. When Hedashield encountered Thorrn in a chamber (after being discovered by Hedashield's men as an eavesdropper and forced into their electrochair for interrogation), he pretended to request a chance to move against the Jedi without explaining his alleged reason for suddenly hating them. Hedashield doubted he was being sincere, and while she could tell he was conflicted about his feelings for her, she thought she could gleam useful information about the Jedi Order from him and effectively became the interrogator herself, not the interrogated.

Motivated by this idea, Hedashield directed him to her private quarters. Once the two were comfortably seated, with Thorrn lamenting that the place looked very familiar, they began discussing morals of the Jedi Order and the Third Order. Hedashield insisted that the Jedi are blind, and while Thorrn initially defended this, he found himself being increasingly taken by his attraction to her. She finally got him to talk about Kristen whilst ingeniously pretending that he was the one who brought it up because she found it an uncomfortable subject. Thorrn finally confessed that he sincerely wanted to take revenge on her for cheating him. Believing Thorrn had struck gold, Hedashield promised to help him.

Surprised, and wondering if they really did lack having anything in common, Thorrn surprised her by asking if he can fight alongside the Third Order during their upcoming siege on Coruscant. Hedashield, who saw an opportunity of her own, consented to let him tag along with her as long as he wore a ring located on her dresser to show his allegiance. Following their conversation together, the two spent the next two hours "recharging their batteries" — Xerin Hedashield let B'en'jamin Thorrn rest on her bed while she typed on her computer, eating chocolate.

Knowing that Kristen would return to the Jedi Temple in an effort to save the Jedi Order, Hedashield ordered Darth Mutialatus to send their forces to the planet where they would end the war and Yoda's ancient religion for good. Hedashield changed into a sports bra, but she was alarmed when Thorrn thought she looked extremely attractive in her outfit, as she had always convinced herself she was ugly. Determined to fulfill her oath in the upcoming battle for the galaxy, Hedashield told Thorrn to accompany her in her private speeder. Along with B'en, Xerin rode with her army to Coruscant, where she asked Myddd if he had succeeded in killing Kristen following Tatooine's devastation. He said no, much to Hedashield's disappointment.[2]

Decimating the Jedi Order[]

During the battle, Hedashield commanded her army by using signal flags which tell a legion when to attack, while allowing Thorrn to caress her. On her orders, Mutialatus began by using mutated sando aqua monsters to dig a path through the towers. Yoda commanded the troops to rain lasers upon the Merciless while Kreddus stayed behind with his forces until needed. Hedashield noticed this, and when Thorrn pointed out that they could not fight on two fields at once, she sent the other half of her army, consisting mainly of spear men, to attack the city. Kreddus and his forces retreated to Galactic City.

Hedashield ordered that the troopers continue pushing forward while she sent General Gore to personally kill Kristen as she believed their only focus should be to reach the Jedi Temple so she could destroy it. The Captain reported that Kristen was barricading herself and they were exhausting their resources, but the Supreme Leader insisted that none of this would matter. He reminded her of his debt to her, surprising her, as she did not believe there was a debt to be paid.

Hedashield's now immense army nearly took Galactic City and cornered the Jedi, but Hedashield commanded her force to halt so that her droids could come forward. Then she commanded her army to annihilate the Men of Thorrn. Suddenly, Kristen and Company burst out of the Temple and charged the troops.[2]

A new apprentice[]

Firebird and Victoria went after Hedashield but, when they reached there, Mutialatus snatched Victoria and impaled the adolescent through the torso with his lightsaber. An enraged Thorrn broke off to pursue the Dark Lord, but Hedashield turned and shouted at him, infuriated by his betrayal. He told her he had been playing her, but she coldly stated that she already figured that out for herself.

To B'en'jamin Thorrn, Hedashield appeared an amorphous entity of shadowy mist floating around before she revealed herself. Barely needing any physical exertion for this, she captured the weakened Padawan.[2]

The rise of the Supreme Leader[]

Appointing B'en'jamin Thorrn[]

In the immediate aftermath of the battle, Thorrn promised to submit to her training, promising to serve her and do anything in his power to prove himself to the Supreme Leader. In response, Hedashield told Thorrn that she would give him one final chance on the condition that he captured Kristen.

Later, he returned to her private chambers, where she was waiting for him on her sofa, and reported that he had just done as she had asked by successfully imprisoning Kristen aboard the Vindicator. Having devastated the Jedi, Hedashield gazed out the window and smiled satisfactorily, content at her victory but still regretting the fact that the Third Order may never have Kristen.[2]

Campaign of terror[]

"Malastare is ready to be judged."
―The Captain speaking on behalf of Xerin Hedashield[src]

Xerin Hedashield's relationship with B'en'jamin Thorrn soon became romantic, and they resolved to spend every Friday night together with the two of them doing leisurely activities. She also introduced him to Julian of the Circle of Serenity. The Battle of Coruscant saw the devastation of the Jedi Order. In the months that followed, Hedashield spent most of her time coordinating the Third Order and continuing to train Thorrn. She eventually decided that she was no longer willing to tolerate the existence of Malastare, a planet independent of both the Galactic Republic and the Third Order, which had long supported her enemies. Eventually, Hedashield began an intense weight loss routine, resulting in her gaining a bit of muscle and losing her pronounced gut in the process.

A year after the Jedi Order was devastated in the Battle of Coruscant, the Third Order was ready to stage a coup on Coruscant, which the organization already had an iron grip around, at which point Hedashield planned to step forward and crown herself Queen. Both she and Thorrn agreed that they felt like their lives had improved, as Hedashield had slimmed down considerably and Thorrn had gained even more muscle, and they were even more attracted to each other than they were before.

Later, through Thorrn, Hedashield ordered the Transport Squad to extradite Kristen to Der Erebolten to reckon with her, from twelve standard months of imprisonment aboard the Vindicator. Before her removal from her cell, Thorrn informed and warned the holodroid HAMEN of Kristen's extreme physical prowess. Feeling restless, Hedashield unexpectedly appeared through a Force apparition and told the droid that she would have been more than willing to keep Kristen imprisoned in their headquarters, just as General Gore entered the room. Before Kristen was teleported away, she thanked the General for her reliability before the Vindicator set flight. However, unbeknownst to her, HAMEN had befriended Kristen, and that he had switched appearances with Kristen using his holographic technology, which subsequently allowed Kristen to kill all the troops on the ship, including General Gore, and escape.[1]

Coming out into the open[]

Hunting for Kristen[]

"The Republic was about to destroy an entire planet to justify an illegal war, you’re welcome for dispatching my troops to stop them. You know what? The Republic hardly exists there, they’re on their own. And as a result, they have lived lives of independence and freedom, where the thug rests with the moisture farmer, where everyone’s well-being is based solely on their life choices and skills, where podracing and trade thrive and people can take chances and learn from their mistakes, for it is their choice what they do with their lives, not some obscure tyrant... it’s a heaven in the galaxy."
―Xerin Hedashield[src]

Shortly after arranging Kristen's extradiction, the Captain reported the Pearian's revolt. Gasping with fury, Hedashield told the Captain to approach her, causing him to look at her with dread, until Thorrn told him to leave. Hedashield glared at Thorrn and told the Captain to seek out reinforcements. Tired of isolating herself from galactic affairs, and with victory all but assured for the Third Order, she went with Thorrn and they summoned Darth Mutialatus and together they moved to apprehend Kristen and liberate Vato.

In her first attempt to locate the Pearian, Xerin Hedashield contacted Kristen through her own connection to the Force and they began to metaphysically have a conversation. After Hedashield confessed she had always wanted her and Thorrn by her side as a young and all-powerful trio, she then revealed to Kristen on how thanks to her arranging to rip the government away from Tatooine, the planet had since prospered and was no longer threatened by the Republic's schemes, when the planet had been on the brink of extinction. When Kristen had noted how she had brought about the apparent freedom on Tatooine through violence, Hedashield simply dismissed this as a small price to pay for salvation, while insisting that it was simply fate.

Patiently waiting for Kristen to leave the bunker and stalling the conversation as long as possible, Hedashield had remained calm even as her quarry denied everything that the Supreme Leader believed in and told her she would be happy to talk to her in person, making her realize Hedashield was stalling, as she wanted her to move so she could know where she was, and cut off the connection abruptly, horrified. Despite her annoyance at Kristen's lack of gullibility, she was ready to put a plan in place to infiltrate the prison with Darth Mutialatus and B'en'jamin Thorrn by her side.[1]

Liberation of Vato[]

After finishing her plan on how to infiltrate the prison, Xerin Hedashield went there in person accompanied by Darth Mutialatus and B'en'jamin Thorrn. Hedashield bent down to Vato's face and asked if he trusted her. When he nodded, she unfastened his collar, and as he stood up, she helped him out of his strait-jacket.

This distraction allowed the Wraith to attack. However, Hedashield quickly recomposed herself after being pushed against a wall and landing awkwardly on her back. As Thorrn healed her premature bruises, the Captain tasered the Jedi Master. They got to their feet and began discussing their plans, but the Wraith used the Force to recuperate and attacked Hedashield from behind. She swiftly used a blur of telekinetic lightsaber strikes to scar him and put him out of his misery by stabbing him in the heart, impressing Vato. She grinned at him and told him there was one crystal left to find, and that he could thank her by retrieving it.

Vato thanked Hedashield for rescuing him. Hedashield then told Thorrn to stay with Vato until she contacted them both, with Vato agreeing to bring Thorrn to Der Erebolten if the dark apprentice guided him to the remote world, so the entity could see more involvement in the war at large. Hedashield departed the compound after admitting she had taken a liking to him.[1]

Contacting her allies[]

Hedashield personally threatens Darth Mutialatus.

After sending Darth Mutialatus to Mustafar, Xerin Hedashield returned to Der Erebolten by herself, but she began to realize her forces were growing restless and impatient. Shortly afterwards, Mutialatus went to a flashback where he was speaking to Hedashield. There, Hedashield told Mutialatus her concerns regarding her troops, something he dismissed, though he questioned Vato's formidability. Enraged by his condescending comments, Hedashield threatened the Dark Lord of the Sith, reminding him that she was his only hope of restoring the Sith and promising that he would pay dearly if they lost the upcoming Battle of Mustafar. A few hours later, she awoke from a nap on her couch, still immersed in thoughts regarding her annoyance regarding her right-hand man, and Vato animated a couch to contact Hedashield, prompting her to touch her own couch, learning that they had arrived and had received permission to land.[1]

As Hedashield came to realize she had not understood the true nature of the science tower she had taken over as her home, she realized it was constructed entirely of Force-sensitive materials and was the only place in the entire galaxy apart from the Jedi Temple that could contain the imminent dark ritual. Upon hearing all this, Hedashield realized she had spent so much time alone in there that she had come to love her surroundings and almost feel like they had gained a form of sentience. She then realized she would have to destroy her droids, as Thorrn remarked that returning inside the tower to grab her possessions and pack up would defeat the purpose. Unsure if his claim made sense or not, but not wishing to risk anything, Hedashield broke down crying.

Xerin Hedashield is forced to make a terrible decision.

Thinking back to the fate of Vrean, Hedashield claimed that she could not ignore her destiny to save billions of people a second time. Hedashield tearfully apologized to Thorrn for putting him out of a home before beginning the arcane ritual to destroy her beloved home. Having committed this terrible act, Hedashield sternly looked over the cliff and mourned over the tower's destruction, as a voice told her her will was strong and her sacrifice had proved her worthy. Now capable of wielding Vato's Orenda, Hedashield told Thorrn they would find a solution soon.[1]

On the run[]

"Maybe it's not malice, Xerin. Maybe he doesn't realize he's being a total nerf herder."
"The arrogant never do, B'en.
"
―B'en'jamin Thorrn and Xerin Hedashield[src]

They arrived on a street of Galactic City, where Xerin Hedashield channeled Vato's Orenda for the first time to manipulate the perceptions of those around her so they were not recognized. She suggested they enter a fast food restaurant, as a means to get out of the open. However, minutes later Hedashield accidentally cut off her connection to Perception Manipulation, and the duo were thus tracked down by two Force-sensitive mercenaries. As a brief but violent skirmish broke out, Hedashield hid behind a bench and nervously fired a beam of energy at the mercenaries, subduing them both and giving Hedashield immense confidence in her new abilities.[1]

Skirmish on Umbara[]

"Everything you just said was hypocritical. The Republic hasn't done anything the Third Order has done with less justification."
"I never told Darth Mutialatus to massacre three quarters of Alderaan's population, if that's what you mean. He wasn't supposed to
murder anybody. When I found out, it affected my ability to use the Force."
―Victoria and Xerin Hedashield[src]

To her surprise, however, she was greeted by Victoria, who had used B'en'jamin Thorrn's signal to find her and was standing on top of a hill. Victoria cited that she probably didn't know who she was, but Hedashield told her that Thorrn had divulged everything he knew of Victoria to her. Ignoring this, Victoria asked why she thought what she was doing was okay. Hedashield claimed to be a revolutionist. When Victoria accused her of being an evil woman who desired mass murder, Hedashield asked her if she considered her evil because the Jedi had told her so, which Victoria refused to confirm or deny. While using the Force to let Victoria peer into her childhood memories, Xerin then told her about the history of her homeworld Vrean, explaining how when a deadly plague had threatened their planet, they would not even listen to Senator Chalatos' plea for help because they prioritized the quality of their meeting chairs, a neglection which led to her prediction of worldwide devastation coming true. Hedashield explained that under her rule, people would be free to follow their own goals and make their own decisions.

While initially shaken and in agreement with Hedashield's spite towards the Republic, Victoria stood and firmly labelled Hedashield as hypocritical, citing the Massacre on Alderaan. Hedashield claimed that she had not ordered Darth Mutialatus to exterminate anyone and had punished him for it, before explaining a flaw in her Force connection that had accidentally caused Mutialatus horrific suffering, though Hedashield still felt it was karma.

Disappointed, Hedashield proceeded to summon Vato's Orenda to conjure a black living beast that beat Victoria into submission.

The woman proceeded to summon Vato's Orenda and engaged the army in combat, using her powers of telekinesis and weapon manifestation to slaughter them. Having easily overpowered Yoda, Hedashield managed to overpower every Jedi attacking her until the ground was littered with corpses. A horrified Thorrn followed her in silence. She then returned to the comfort of her ship and they departed from Umbara.[1]

Battle of Mustafar[]

"But I am not an ingrate. I thank you for showing me what to do. I will wipe out your poisoned Order down to the last teenage Padawan Learner. Then I will take up every Youngling under the age of thirteen, and bless them with the knowledge I have blessed my followers with, and recreate the Jedi Order with Darth Mutialatus as the Grandmaster in place of Master Yoda, peacekeepers, guardians, and bringers of justice."
―Xerin Hedashield[src]

The Third Order had drawn Kristen into a one-on-one situation with one of their own. Following this, Xerin Hedashield flew back to Mustafar to kill Kristen once and for all. She touched down from her ship flanked by B'en'jamin Thorrn, Darth Mutialatus, the Captain, Velocity Tox, and Lieutenant Juliah. When Kristen arrived, Hedashield realized she was accompanied by aspiring governor Shae Bibble and aspiring Jedi Knight Victoria and telepathically ordered Darth Mutialatus to bind them, before verbally acknowledging Kristen's arrival. She asked if Kristen was alone, and when she immediately said she was, Hedashield called her a liar and had Victoria and Bibble gagged, before acknowledging they were not the only ones "burdened with the corruption bitter men induce upon innocent children" and offered them both a place in her ranks. Due to their relentless efforts to stop her, Hedashield had now realized that the Jedi would never be able to stop remembering the victims that comprised the Republic and would fight and fight until each and every one of them were silenced. Now knowing what she needed to do to prevent this, Hedashield announced that upon destroying the Jedi, she would annihilate them only to spare every Youngling under the age of thirteen and corrupt them with the Third Order's ideologies so that they could rebuild the Jedi under Darth Mutialatus, who would have taken Yoda's place. That way, the galactic populace would never know about the previous Order or government, and be grateful for the ones they were given.

Upon hearing her plans, Victoria told Xerin Hedashield that her universe would be born out of blood, but Hedashield retorted that the New Jedi Order would never know of this because she would make sure that she killed all the Jedi. Kristen, in complete disgust and fury over Hedashield's new goals, immediately attacked Hedashield, but the Captain smote her in the head and she fell to the ground. As Kristen laid on the ground, feeling hopeless, Hedashield empathized with her pain, understanding the concept of self-sacrifice due to nearly doing the same to protect her homeworld. She bitterly stated that she knew nothing. In response, Victoria, appearing interested in her offer, wondered if she could help her find her parents separated from her as an infant. Hedashield claimed that she could find them, and happily accepted Victoria's servitude, but she still had a strange feeling that something was wrong. This was proven correct when Victoria drew her lightsaber, only for Hedashield to injure the Jedi as she acknowledged her outstanding willpower. However, she said there would be no second chances this time and yanked Victoria's weapon from her hand before slashing her head open.

Infuriated, Kristen attempted to attack her in revenge for killing her dear friend, but Hedashield easily used an energy blast to shoot her away and into a wall. Everyone took a step forward when Kristen did not move. Unsure of what had just happened, Hedashield ordered B'en'jamin Thorrn to check Kristen's body. Thorrn did so and pronounced Kristen dead, eliciting celebration from the Third Order leaders. Hedashield declared that no man could threaten her anymore. She degraded Kristen's body by electrocuting it.[1]

Surrounded by heroes[]

As the Battle of Mustafar ensued, Xerin Hedashield realized she would be the primary target of the enemy attack and so ordered the Captain to remain behind to protect her. Yoda then personally confronted him, knocking him off the ledge, but the Captain retaliated and incapacitated the Jedi Grandmaster. Before he could kill him, however, Shae Bibble and an unidentified member of the People of Orenbach came to Yoda's aid, telling the Captain that Yoda would never fight alone. As Hedashield watched from her chair, the Captain faced off against his challengers and gradually gained the upper hand over both of them. However, Bibble telekinetically threw the Captain backward. Jumping to her feet, Hedashield attempted to catch the Captain, holding him suspended in midair. However, the Captain shot her a reassuring glance and leaped at Yoda again, exploding upon contact with him and tearing the platform in half. Panicking, Hedashield used Vato's Orenda to contain the explosion and reduce its size, at the cost of saving Yoda unintentionally. As his body disintegrated, an outraged Hedashield turned and blasted Shae Bibble and her friend away.

Hedashield resumed her seat and continued watching the battle unfold before her. While Kristen dueled Darth Mutialatus, Hedashield witnessed the arrival of B'en'jamin Thorrn with several Padawans and the members of the Men of Thorrn had came to help. After Kristen defeated Darth Mutialatus, she swung away on a rope and landed on a platform. But even with of those reinforcements, the Third Order was still slowly overwhelming the Jedi and civilians as Hedashield encountered Kristen.

Hedashield confronted Kristen, citing that the Galactic Republic would inevitably doom the galaxy it presided over. At long last, she battled the Pearian, channeling powerful torrents of Dark energies and throwing her through the air with great force. Kristen was unable to effectively counter this assault and fell to the ground. Continuing to expel black energy from her body, Hedashield arrogantly stated that Kristen was nothing compared to her. As Kristen lay smouldering on the ground, Hedashield, filled with more power than all of her enemies combined, then used Vato's Orenda to fire a powerful blast from her hand through the atmosphere which destroyed the Jedi Order's entire fleet along with many civilians, as the burning remains of the army flew into oblivion and Hedashield looked at the orange cloud spreading in the sky demonstrating the destruction, with a sense of satisfaction as she saw the pain she was causing to her enemies.[1]

Obliterated by her own power[]

Turning back to Kristen as she prepared to resume their battle, Xerin Hedashield repeated her question, but Kristen remarked that Thorrn could. Hedashield was briefly taken off-guard, contemplating whether Thorrn really had the will to take her life after everything they had been through. Kristen leaped on her, knocking her down and causing her to lose her balance and fall off a ledge, as she wasn't agile enough to roll back over in time.

Several moments later, Hedashield emerged, generating oversized torpedoes to pierce the tanks, before conjuring one final one to drive directly into the Jedi's primary battle craft. However, B'en'jamin Thorrn and Kristen worked together and, bellowing, telekinetically seized control of the mountain-sized missile and drove it into the lava right where Hedashield stood. Hedashield looked on in horror as her united enemies thrust down the missile she herself had created, impaling Hedashield and completely obliterating her body. The missile continued down into Mustafar, accidentally causing an entire quarter of the planet to be destroyed in the massive explosion, incinerating any possible remains of Xerin Hedashield into oblivion.[1]

Legacy[]

After Mustafar's devastation, Xerin Hedashield's death was confirmed by Kristen and B'en'jamin Thorrn over the scattered world to the Jedi Order, which in turn, sent word of the battle's outcome in mass communications claiming to be the new power in the galaxy. Furthermore, in wake of the deaths of the Supreme Leader and many high-ranking officers during the battle, coupled with the flight of her second-in-command, as well as the resulting power vacuum, the Third Order collapsed due to internal power struggles and became damaged beyond repair.[1]

Several of the Third Order's actions had lasting repurcussions on the galaxy as a whole. Thanks to her minions' assault on Tatooine, the Hutts were able to take over the desert world, remaining in charge well into 0 ABY. Additionally, the relations with the Trade Federation, which had sided with Xerin Hedashield when she personally recruited them, and the rest of the Republic, never truly mended, indirectly leading to the invasion of Naboo in 32 BBY.[5][6]

Physical description[]

"Xerin [pulled] off her traveling jacket and [hung it on] the couch. She was wearing slightly revealing pajamas that exposed certain areas of body fat, which she certainly had a bit more of than the next person. B'en thought her body bulged not in a gross way, but in a beautiful kind of way."
―B'en'jamin's opinion of Xerin's physical appearance[src]

Tall, delicate, and elegant, Xerin Hedashield was a stunningly and chillingly beautiful young woman. She was almost six feet tall. She had long, brown hair which had cybernetic silver accents running down the back vertically, implanted after the Devastation of Vrean to stabilize the flow of blood throughout her body. Her hair was almost always held back by a simple black headband decorated with a diamond pattern, eyes with lavender pupils, and was usually seen in one of three types of outfits. When traveling, she wore a decorative scarlet jacket over her body, which was decorated in a red abstract shape a little down from the collar. It was clasped with a carved orange clasp ending a few inches above her stretched, doughy stomach, hence partially covering her fat from people she interacted with in person. When indoors, where she spent most of her time, she wore a variety of immodest pajamas which exposed certain areas of her corpulent frame, particularly favoring ones that let her bulging abdomen breathe. Hedashield had a reasonable degree of regard for her appearance, keeping an extensive wardrobe with the clothes she deemed comfortable.

As a small girl, Hedashield had a very slender and athletic build. Eventually, her personality changed completely and she began exercising infrequently and dieting poorly. She became soft and her once flat tummy began expanding out. However, her good looks did not cease to increase as she grew older, and she cunningly used them to charm many of her teachers at school. After beginning her life on Der Erebolten, she rarely left the safety and comfort of her private quarters, and while she luxuriated, her droids did all her physical tasks. By the time the Pearian had been located, Hedashield had a rather large abdomen; it was mentioned by B'en'jamin Thorrn that she had grown even fatter between the Skirmish on Der Erebolten and the Battle of Coruscant, and that her round belly stuck out further than before. However, her weight and body fat seemed to go directly to the abdomen, looking rather slender elsewhere. However, following the Battle of Coruscant, she proceeded to go on a diet and slim down considerably months before the Liberation of Vato. Subsequently, she was muscular and had toned arms and legs, with her skin becoming less delicate and her midriff becoming flat and lined.

Xerin was 161 centimeters tall in 156 BBY, and in 139 BBY, she was 194 centimeters tall. In 141 BBY, she weighed 122 kilograms; in 140 BBY, she weighed 130 kilograms. In 139 BBY, she weighed 148 kilograms, and in 138 BBY she weighed 65 kilograms.

Personality and traits[]

"Remember, only the strongest wills can shape the galaxy for the better."
―Xerin[src]

The basis of Xerin Hedashield's life and motivations was driven by a sense of injustice and the idea that no one in the galaxy had any power through the Galactic Republic, as she believed the government wanted its inhabitants to be weak and thereby easy to control. She views people as deserving of freedom and to follow their own goals, regardless of the Republic's sense of need for control. Such a mindset allowed her to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, if she believed they would get in the way of the Third Order. Ever since she was a child, she was mischievous, but not necessarily malicious, though ever since the traumatic devastation of her homeworld, her life has been based around seeing her dream of a galaxy of productive and intellectual citizens being protected by the Republic, rather than dominated. Despite being frequently seen by everyone else as the ultimate personification of malice, cruelty, arrogance, egotism, narcissism, megalomania, and a truly satanic woman obsessed solely with holding dominion over all life, Xerin was clearly a sophisticated and tortured soul given her traumatic past and obsession with making up for what she perceived as her fault — a belief caused by her knowledge of what could happen and not acting in time, and not being athletic enough to interfere — led her to commit horrible actions all in the name of saving the universe even at a great personal sacrifice to herself.

She was extremely insecure about her physical appearance, not vain, but self-hating, and about her own strength following her traumatic failure that had ultimately culminated from her expecting too much of herself. Consequentially, she was genuinely alarmed when B'en'jamin Thorrn was taken with her appearance in a sports bra, having not expected his reaction to be positive, if Thorrn thought anything of it at all. However, she had since let go of her problem with her body during her time spent with him and accepted herself for who she was, at least physically. Ultimately, she began slenderizing strenuously, and had she not died on Mustafar, she may have become exceedingly athletic given more time. She was also very modest, only wearing skimpy clothes in private and around her significant other.

"I've studied history, Thorrn, and in studying I learned in detail of the conquerors of galactic history. More importantly, I discovered their methods and the flaws that doomed them to failure. This way, I will not repeat the same mistakes of history."
―Xerin Hedashield to B'en'jamin Thorrn[src]

As the Supreme Leader of the Third Order, she was a calculating and reserved young woman as well as a powerful and skilled mistress of the dark side of the Force. Darth Mutialatus respected her and claimed she was wise. In spite of her youth, Hedashield bore a vast knowledge of both the past (particularly the Galactic Republic) and the Force.

Hedashield showed little emotion, appearing very calm, and never spoke openly of her worry or distress regarding the circumstances against her and the Third Order, believing it wise to portray herself to her troops as confident no matter what the odds. This was a stark contrast to the diabolical Darth Mutialatus, who was prone to violent outbursts when faced with frustration. She also has shown a dark sense of sarcastic humor and is able to remain calm and unfazed in situations that would frighten and shock most others. However, due to not hearing very many jokes the sophistication in her humor left much to be desired, such as in the case of her joke about neebrays.

Xerin Hedashield was very confident to the extent of borderline arrogance, making her almost impossible to intimidate. Her arrogance was shown by her considering herself more intelligent and benevolent than anyone else who actually had the will to rule the galaxy given the chance, and therefore worthy of the task. She also told Kristen she had always been more stupid, dull, and unattractive than she was. Hedashield, additionally, was certainly not an individual who tolerated failure, so if anyone from the Third Order failed in what they were supposed to do, Hedashield would not hesitate to torture them or order their execution by one of their fellow followers. She even chuckled evilly when Kristen begged her to spare Victoria's life and bluntly ordered the Captain to opt to kill the latter instead of torturing her, which had been the plan. Ever the technological genius, Hedashield has created some weapons herself. To B'en'jamin Thorrn, she cleverly appeared an amorphous entity of shadowy mist floating around before she revealed herself, and captured him. Similar to other practitioners of the dark side, notably the Sith, Hedashield was motivated by fear, specifically the fear of losing her power.

Hedashield did not reveal her Force-sensitivity to anyone except Darth Mutialatus, even disguising it to Myddd as power emenating from the X-Crystal and not her own body. She is also one of few inactive D.I.T. villains, her only move in canon (that is not carried out by her lackeys) is unleashing Vato's Orenda on the respective Umbaran and Mustafarian strike forces. She is extremely patient, as she keeps a low profile, lurking in the shadows and making others do her work for her, though this also was due to her being very (though understandably) mistrustful. Aside from her hesitancy to work with others, at least in life-threatening situations, she also believed that directly engaging in battle in the name of the Third Order was beneath her and her position. It was also confirmed that the first time she ever got in a real fight was during the Battle of Coruscant. Although Hedashield's physical skills possibly had already faded from her as she gradually gained weight due to a shockingly sedentary life, her Force-aided abilities of persuasion, manipulation and perception were tremendous. She was very fond of food, and having a habit of stuffing herself with healthy food even after she was full and often eating mounds of desserts, which not only made her a very gluttonous woman, but also goes to show just how strong her insecurities really were. She also kept an enormous stash of food in her bedroom inside her Cuisine Cube, where they were in easy reach. At her current age, Xerin usually isolated herself in her private quarters, where she could continue to develop her future career and contact her followers directly and still stuff her chubby body. It is unknown what she ate for breakfast, but for lunch and dinner, she always ate a huge hot dog, Corellian fries, a pickle, and two chocolate bars. Her sedentary lifestyle and gluttony had their roots as a teenager and increased considerably by the beginning of the Conflict of the Numbers, and they have resulted in her noticeable corpulence. Later on, Xerin began improving her dieting, and was known to eat rice and Wookiee steak instead of hot dogs and fries, presumably making other changes to her diet as well.

When Kristen and B'en'jamin Thorrn escaped her clutches with evidence of her whereabouts, she hid her seething fury behind a mask of disappointment and calmly expressed her thoughts of their current situation to her followers, eventually letting off steam to Darth Mutialatus when they were alone. She once warned Mutialatus that he would know a new kind of pain if he did not give her the Y-Crystal, heavily implying that she had tortured him more than once. She was particularly brutal towards him, as she felt threatened by his connection to the Dark side which no other known Third Order individuals possessed and clearly had to take extreme measures to remain the alpha in their relationship. She was clearly effective, since the Dark Lord of the Sith clearly respected her, at least to some degree. However, Hedashield's patience has limits and when it is pushed to the edge, she is fully willing to take action when necessary, as after the devastation of the Jedi Order, she was finally comfortable with taking matters into her own hands and hunting down the Pearian herself. She still maintained her propensity for delegation, having Thorrn do much of her dirty work for her during their mission.

Xerin loved her family first, foremost, and unconditionally and desperately sought to save them, going so far as to convince Senator Chalatos to let her accompany him to the Senate, only to witness their selfish negligence leading to the devastation of her people. This incident has burdened Xerin with immense regrets and remorse as she confessed to Victoria that she had failed to act on the inevitable massacre of her people once when she could have saved them had she not lost her strength due to being sedentary and lacking dietary balance. Hedashield, who cared deeply about the survival of her fellow community members, looked saddened and teary whilst viewing the wasteland of Vrean and the corpses of her fallen brothers. As a result of all this, Xerin became hell-bent on destroying the Republic to its last politician and instilling a new government under her dictatorship as to save these civilizations from the same tragedy on Vrean. This is why Xerin truly believes her mission of conquest to be a righteous cause, seeing herself a righteous soul who is doing what is necessary to save all the civilizations of the universe and redeem herself in the process.

As a child at school, Hedashield was initially very physically active, but going into both junior high and puberty, she gradually lost her interest in sports and became addicted to eating sweets, so other students noticed that by the time seventh grade was over she was undoubtedly gaining weight. Nevertheless, the increasingly sedentary teenager had lost none of her brilliance and was considered an intelligent, polite young woman who showed an enthusiasm to learn and was able to use her superficial charm to make many do what she wanted, showing her skill at being an exceptional master manipulator. She was scientifically clever enough to create an antidote for the Omnipotent One's condition. This, coupled with her reputation as a model pupil, had earned her the trust and respect of her teachers and peers and the people she induced into the Third Order after she graduated. However, this was all a ruse, as she was very manipulative, with her and her best friend, Vlaire, initiating numerous "nasty incidents" that happened throughout their time at school that the authorities were never completely able to link to them.

"Xerin doesn’t march up to people’s houses and bang on their front doors, Kristen. She tricks, outmaneuvers, and blackmails them. She’s well-practiced at operating in secrecy."
―Shae Bibble[src]

To achieve her mission, Hedashield uses her charisma, considerable skills in leadership, and knowledge of past Darksiders, until domination and orchestrated genocide both became second nature to her. Hedashield is immensely skilled at being charming when she wishes to be. Learning from millennia of colonization and the reasons for the failures of other beings to topple the Galactic Republic, Hedashield planned to start a war throughout the galaxy, the likes of which no one had ever seen before, to destabilize the Republic and provide the tools oppressed people need to fight back. Although she wanted what was best for all people of the galaxy, the Third Order brought the galaxy closer to war and destruction than any time since the Great Sith War — her supposed dream of making people independent of politicians' wills caused them only to cling to the Republic more for protection. Even Darth Mutialatus, realized the unnecessary violence caused by supporting the Third Order and deserted her, believing she had become insane with power.

Xerin Hedshield's warped views and rapidly increasing power made her somewhat delusional, believing the galaxy would be grateful for losing both their leaders and protectors and would simply accept a new dictatorship made possible by sheer terrorism, as well as assuming Victoria would be happy to meet her in person (though it's unclear if the latter statement was sarcasm). Alternatively, it's possible she was mildly egotistical, as she had stated that they (the galactic population, many of whom lost loved ones to the Third Order's attacks and genocides) 'should' feel grateful, and upon reflecting on her confrontation with Victoria, she decided to destroy the Jedi Order but spare the Younglings, and then remake the Jedi in her image, an Order that would show 'appreciation', and it had been implied several times that she considered her very existence an act of fate. When she nearly crossed blades with Kristen and B'en'jamin Thorrn, she clearly had no fear of losing, and she later also demonstrated no fear at all when confronting an army of one hundred Jedi Masters. Though she subsequently proved her point by dominating Thorrn during the Battle of Coruscant (physically and emotionally) and slaughtered the entire hundred-man army with ease, Hedashield's hubris also turned out to be her downfall — she underestimated Thorrn's judgement, which ultimately led to her being destroyed by twenty Jedi using the Force simultaneously. As she looked up at her assailants, she could not accept her fate, dying with a terrified look on her face as she had been struggling to repel the twenty-pronged attack to no avail.

Xerin's view on Jedi teachings was extremely, almost selectively negative. She believed that truth could be absolute and did not put it past anyone to deal in absolutes, citing that the Jedi taught their disciples the opposite to deliberately mislead them. She also believed that they encouraged a callous disregard for love, going so far as to revel in a loved one's slow and painful death, and to frown on those who acted on having the power to save their loved ones, accussing the Jedi of dissing them as essentially "greedy monster[s], among other things". She rashly concluded that these ideals implicitly condoned killing one's master or apprentice as a last test to prove their callous disregard for experiencing love in any shape or form. Hence, she felt that B'en'jamin Thorrn's reverent regard for Rumberus and lingering feelings for Kristen were both touching and helped prove he 'had the heart' to become part of something 'greater' than the Jedi Order. Ironically, she disapproved of them taking children from their parents at a young age, when the Third Order did just that. However, it is possible that she was simply trying to appeal to Thorrn's love for children, and wasn't deliberately dealing in hypocrisy. Although never explicitly spoken of, it can be assumed she looked down on numerous other Jedi ideals, philosophies, and beliefs as well.

Despite her universally evil nature, Hedashield was still very empathetic and wise — B'en'jamin Thorrn has acknowledged the former and Darth Mutialatus has acknowledged the latter, whereas Julian has acknowledged both. She had some serious "trust issues" that were the result of her belief that no one in the Third Order was genuinely loyal to her as a person, instead turning their loyalty entirely to the cause itself, making her think they could not care less about what happened to her. Even as a teenager, she disliked the idea of becoming overly attached to anyone. Despite later opening up to Julian and Thorrn and even being willing to be vulnerable in front of them, this fear is one of the driving factors that led her to isolate herself during the Conflict of the Numbers and the years of preparation beforehand, though it was quite obvious that in spite of finding her life enjoyable, she was extremely lonely. Ironically, Hedashield had grown so attached to the Dark Tower that she isolated in that she felt as though it had gained a sense of sentience from its lengthy exposure to the Force, and was also heartbroken when she realized she had to destroy the Dark Tower along with the droids that had served her and kept her company for years to gain Vato's Orenda, to the point where she was shedding tears. Due to her belief that it was for the greater good, she still went through with it, though Victoria noted that she was tormented by guilt and grief during the battle on Umbara.

Powers and abilities[]

Powers[]

"The Dark side of the Force is a generous and unpreventable part of nature. Some would even call it the answer to the galaxy's biggest question of all. Wielding it is a responsibility and a privilege few are ready for."
―Xerin[src]
  • Dark side of the Force: While she never received any real training to harness her connection to the Force, Xerin Hedashield was self-taught, extremely powerful, and has an extremely strong connection to the Dark side. Her skills in the Force were tremendous. Her mastery of the Force was so great that Hedashield was capable of exerting her power with the barest minimum of gestures to devastating effect even from great distances. Although both B'en'jamin Thorrn and Darth Mutialatus possessed a raw connection to the Force and had been training with professionals for years, Hedashield's self-taught abilities eclipsed their powers due to the greater knowledge and experience at the Supreme Leader's disposal. Even Abbott, one of the greatest warriors in the galaxy, was no match for her, as she effortlessly incapacitated him and violently smote him against the side of the Dark Tower, although she failed to finish him due to his timely escape. However, it was implied that her Force applications could be more devastating when she was not sufficiently focused or in control of her emotions.
    • Telekinesis: She possessed an affinity for Telekinesis, which she was known using to choke and throw her opponents. She was able to immobilize and restrain her targets effortlessly, which allowed her to manipulate their movements. When Thorrn attempted to punch her during the Battle of Coruscant, she flung her hand at him, and while it didn't touch him, he fell back onto the chair.
      • Telekinetic lightsaber combat: She was skilled at telekinetic lightsaber combat, which allowed her to wield a lightsaber in combat, holding the weapon aloft with the Force and having it fight with a will of its own. She confessed, however, that she lacked confidence in her ability to physically wield a lightsaber as an outcome of sedentary living.
    • Force lightning: Hedashield was able to use Force lightning, which she blasted against the floor like a shockwave to knock her apprentice off his feet and cause him immense pain and writhe in horrible agony. However, this barbaric application was actually an accident as her mind was focused on agonizing memories and they came pouring out into his body, indicating that Hedashield's Force applications could be more devastating when she was not sufficiently focused or in control of her emotions.
    • Umbrakinesis: Hedashield was able to channel the Dark side to unleash blasts, tendrils, and spikes of energy that were powerful enough to pressure and temporarily overwhelm Kristen to harm the nearly invulnerable Pearian. This unique attack was another Force ability only she has ever been seen using, and one she had not needed Vato's Orenda to perform. Indeed, even Vato cited that it was truly a testament to just how knowledgeable she was in the Force.
    • Pain Inducement: Hedashield seemed to be able to cause Darth Mutialatus great pain just by touching his head, which she could do even though the Sith Lord was communicating metaphysically.
    • Psychokinesis: Hedashield could use the Force to alter the minds of others, as she did to two mercenaries. However, she confessed she never tried to perfect her use of the ability as she hated using it in the first place; this also indicates it is of the Force, and not of Vato's Orenda.
    • Peak-human condition: In her childhood, Hedashield was in excellent physical condition, more so than most of her peers. However, by the time the Pearian had been located, Hedashield's muscles were soft, her skin was delicate, and her gut was bulging. It is unclear how much her overweight body impeded her physical aptitude, but after slimming down, Xerin Hedashield was able to move with incredible grace in battle, using her momentum to charge her body for unleashing vicious attacks when she is forced into it.
      • Regenerative healing element: Being a bulky yet delicate young woman, Xerin Hedashield can be easily injured by relatively minimal amounts of blunt force. However, her metabolism enables her to rapidly regenerate damaged bodily tissue with greater speed and efficiency than that of a human. Similarly, she is almost completely immune to diseases and other ailments correlated with overeating, though this power doesn't do anything to prevent her from gaining weight at the pace of a normal woman her age. She retained her regenerative healing factor after slimming down, quickly recovering from taking a couple of hits during the Liberation of Vato.

Vato's Orenda[]

"Xerin must have had a quicker reaction time than B'en thought, because she retaliated with an energy blast, flicking her arm at the air separating the two women more quickly than he thought was physically possible."
―B'en'jamin Thorrn[src]

After equipping Vato's Orenda, combined with her already extraordinary raw power, Xerin Hedashield was granted the potential to safely harness the supernatural powers Vato had possessed to a nearly omnipotent degree, making her the most powerful being in the galaxy while gaining absolute control over the entire fabric of existence and also able to do almost anything she desired, to the point that even with a severe injury, she was able to wield the fabric of space for combative purposes with extreme finesse, making her nearly impossible to defeat in battle and allowing her to overpower both Victoria and Kristen and the combined might of a platoon of one hundred Jedi Knights with ease. Indeed, B'en'jamin Thorrn was frequently caught off guard by what she did with her newfound powers, considering her extremely unpredictable.

  • Edaphokinesis: Hedashield could manipulate the terrain at such a scale as to pull the surface of Umbara itself to force Victoria to her.
  • Reality Warping: With Vato's power, Hedashield could also alter reality to create highly realistic and elaborate physical simulations and illusions of false realities over a wide range of influence, which she did to warp reality around Umbara to show Victoria how Vrean once was beautiful.
    • Conjuration: Xerin Hedashield was able to conjure a massive black and entirely corporeal alien using Vato's Orenda. The alien could frequently change its body shape to better fight Victoria. In addition, she could manifest gigantic missiles from the ground surrounding her, as seen when she attacked the Jedi on Mustafar.
  • Cognikinesis: With Vato's Orenda, Hedashield could mask her identity from the presence of those around her, so only B'en'jamin Thorrn recognized her, so anyone who knew her was made to perceive her as a complete stranger.
"Suddenly, a powerful burst of energy smashed into the ceiling and ricocheted against the assailants, throwing them both to the ground. B’en turned. Xerin was clinging to the bench, shivering from the cold, her face looking as terrified as a newborn child. Realizing what had happened, B’en could only imagine the level of violence involved in the scuffle to contain Vato in prison."
―Description[src]
  • Enhanced superhuman attributes: While Xerin Hedashield possessed several formidable powers that came with her mastery of the Force, Vato's Orenda enhanced some of them to apocalyptic, nearly godlike levels.
    • Invulnerability: Vato's Orenda rendered Xerin Hedashield's already durable body nigh-invulnerable, which was shown when she was impaled through the torso with a lightsaber and slashed in the abdomen without her body or her clothing being damaged, and emerged completely unharmed after a fully-empowered Kristen slammed her off a cliff. Indeed, only her own ultimate weapon was able to crush her, thus sending the Supreme Leader into oblivion.
    • Enhanced Ergokineis: While Xerin Hedashield already possessed an affinity for powerful energy attacks, bearing Vato's Orenda enhanced it to immeasurable levels, making the enhancement (in her own words) her most simple yet powerful ability granted to her. These attacks applied incredible amounts of powerful concussive force that were capable of incapacitating and greatly damaging two mercenaries with a shockwave of energy. In fact, Hedashield had not even required any physical exertion to do this, as she had been clinging to a bench the whole time. Hedashield could take this further to charge objects with explosive energy, directly concentrate the energy into destructively powerful beams easily strong enough to annihilate the Jedi's fleet.
    • Enhanced Telekinesis: While Xerin Hedashield already possessed an affinity for Telekinesis, bearing Vato's Orenda enhanced it to immeasurable levels, as she was able to hold back the Force energies of twenty Jedi Knights and even a Pearian simultaneously, though only for a few seconds before being overwhelmed and crushed once and for all.

Abilities[]

"She was a gifted scientist and a charismatic genius... if I'd had any idea what horrible things she was going to use those skills for..."
―Vlaire[src]
  • Gifted combatant: Xerin Hedashield was moderately skilled in armed combat, in spite of lacking confidence she could fight with her bare hands. Her skills were such that once empowered by Vato's Orenda she single-handedly slew the entire army of Jedi Masters, among the strongest warriors in the galaxy, with Yoda himself only narrowly escaping.
  • Genius-level intelligence: Hedashield was not only strong in the Dark side, but also possessed an incredible intellect, as she was considered to be a brilliant student in her school on Vrean, showing that even in her youth her intelligence bordered on levels of ingenuity. Being highly intellectually and emotionally perceptive, Hedashield could easily see right through most lies and accurately deduce the truth and the character of most people. In fact, even as a teenager she detected a plague that the Galactic Republic was trying to keep secret from public knowledge and accurately predict their approach to it would ravage Vrean. Her intellect was evidenced by her strategic cunning in being able to mastermind and orchestrate a great war, overwhelming all of the galactic community and nearly triumphing. Even as a teenager, she detected a plague that the Galactic Republic was trying to keep secret from public knowledge and accurately predict their approach to it would ravage Vrean.
    • Master tactician: Hedashield was a formidable strategist with years of experience in tactical warfare. Even without using her immense powers, she succeeded in conquering many worlds while relying purely on her tactical experience. Hedashield's tactical ingenuity allowed her to create extremely complex and well-coordinated plans and execute them effectively, with the strategies she created and employed being so effective that she gave the Jedi immense trouble by launching her own campaign and causing the Battle of Coruscant all the while remaining effectively anonymous easily fooling even the most intelligent beings in the galaxy such as Yoda from figuring out Darth Mutialatus had been aided by Hedashield in his conquest. Hedashield's strategical intuition also allowed her to accurately predict incoming events and effectively manipulate said events to her advantage, as she was able to anticipate a celebration between tens of thousands of politicians, which in turn led to her silencing everyone whose opinion mattered that knew what she had become since the Devastation of Vrean.
    • Master manipulator: Even at a young age, Hedashield displayed remarkable talent for the manipulation of others, being able to gain the trust of every teacher in her school. She also formed what appeared to be a close bond with an extremely cunning teenage girl, Vlaire. She was considered charming by most people who met her, and was able to inspire others to follow her. As an adult, her skills in manipulation grew even further, successfully convincing many beings to join her cause, although she also made use of blackmail and counterfeit conscription to get people to join her.
    • Master deceiver: Xerin Hedashield is phenomenally skilled in deception, notably able to successfully hide her internal pure malevolence under a kindly and altruistic façade, which was convincing enough to initially fool the brilliant B'en'jamin Thorrn and, albeit to a limited extent, the extremely perceptive Kristen. To them, she posed as an eccentric and charismatic commoner who lived by herself in an ordinary apartment that Yoda trusted for being an intelligent woman the Third Order wouldn't suspect anytime soon. Additionally, she was able to hide knowledge of the Order's existence from the galaxy at large, and to an ever greater extent her leadership of it from everyone except for Darth Mutialatus and Captain Cole, with almost everyone affiliated with the Order, including General Gore, Myddd, and all the Grabbers, only knowing her as "the Supreme Leader".
    • Expert actress: Besides her formidable Dark side aptitude and extensive knowledge of the Force, Hedashield proved to be a consummate actress, being able to hide her true nature from almost everyone in school. She was able to convince all of the school staff and instructors that her facade of being a model student was her true personality.
    • Expert leader: Even when she was still only a young student, Hedashield was already a very effective leader, as she was able to lead Vlaire and her other friends to effectively sneak past surveillance, being responsible for several nasty incidences that were never connected to them, showing that even at a young age, Hedashield was a very competent leader. As she began isolating and she grew older and gained more experience in leading and thus honed leadership skills further, Hedashield's style of leadership changed from the original charismatic rule of her friends to the tyrannical and completely ruthless - though no less highly effective - command of her followers demonstrated throughout both her personal campaign and the Conflict of the Numbers. The best example of her efficiency as a leader would be the fact that she, with the help of less than forty united followers, assembled an army and prepared to engage both the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order.
    • Gifted social intuit: Despite spending most of her time alone, Xerin Hedashield still has a high degree of social confidence, allowing her to intuitively determine how to interact with others, gain their respect and get her point across with a calmness, eloquence, and charisma that belie her self-righteous malevolence, megalomania, bloodlust, and actual emotional state. Hence, Hedashield diplomatically greeted Kristen upon first meeting her, diplomatically addressed the Council of the Third Order, politely addressing the Vizier with a proposition, and appealing to the Trade Federation's trust by financially supporting their efforts, gaining their trust, successfully appealed to the bitter Myddd, ignoring the latter's initial vulgar insults (despite initially desiring to use him as a disposable pawn), successfully maintained her graceful poise at a huge party (despite being grossly overwhelmed by the crowds and noise, and in spite of several mens' attempts to provoke Hedashield and get a rise out of her), to which Lieutenant Juliah would commend her for having “handled the whole thing phenomenally” (with Hedashield notably even claiming to her that “there was little to put up with in the first place”). When B'en'jamin Thorrn spied on her, he became very intrigued by her ideals and followed her to her comfortable quarters and let his guard down severely, intent to continue a further discussion. However, her social skills are not perfect, as she was genuinely surprised that Kristen was embarrassed to see her half-naked, presumably due to believing only men cared at all if she was wearing any clothes. (All despite her incredible hatred of Jedi and of governors). Only when finally confronted by Kristen does Hedashield not hold herself back in conversation for the first time, passionately expressing her immense hatred for the Republic before assaulting her with the Dark side. As a result, Hedashield remains extremely well-respected not only by high-ranking members of the Third Order (especially the Captain, Julian, Velocity Tox, and later Thorrn) and criminal allies, but even by the politicians at the party she attended.
    • Master scientist: Xerin Hedashield is a brilliant genius scientist, highly skilled and knowledgeable in a vast array of scientific fields. When the Omnipotent One was ill and in need of an antidote that didn't exist, Hedashield came to his aid by bringing him an exceptionally complex array of treatment materials that he needed. Had she not created the ideal antidote by herself, the Omnipotent One surely would have died, showing that even at a young age she was a phenomenally gifted scientist.
    • Master engineer: Xerin Hedashield is a phenomenally brilliant and prolific supergenius engineer, computer scientist, computer programmer, cryptographer and robotics technician. She built droids to perform most of her physical tasks for her, and built a Cube to suck in all the food in a store and place it in the perfect spot, as well as implying that when the Cube plugged in to the base of the Dark Tower, it activated lamps and refrigeration technology to keep all the wares at ideal temperatures. The machine is implied to be both unbreakable and undetectable, this goes to show just how competent Hedashield is at engineering.
  • Indomitable willpower: Driven by the fall of her people, Xerin Hedashield possesses an unbreakable determination to achieve her goals, spending years patiently building up her armies. Her will to destroy the Galactic Republic caused the Supreme Leader to tolerate the presence of those she heartily disliked, such as Kristen, Myddd, and most of all, Darth Mutialatus. Additionally, her iron will and confidence — moreso than out of any bravery or courage — made her invulnerable to fear and intimidation. She never once begged anyone for mercy, instead fighting back in defiance. Ironically, she fears death, mostly because of how instrumental she believed herself to be in the prosperity of the galaxy as a whole, which is a small yet significant hamper on her willingness to take risks. However, she tended to avoid battle despite her confidence in her abilities, at least until the Liberation of Vato, not out of fearing death, but because she believed such affairs were beneath her and her position.

Weaknesses[]

"Get out the gumdrops! Bring on the steak fries! Don't forget the marshmallow sauce and spoon! It's binging time!"
―Xerin mocking herself after Armin saying that he liked her better when she was overweight[src]
  • Corpulence: Xerin Hedashield was lacking in physical strength and agility, and prior to obtaining Vato's Orenda she was seemingly lacking in durability. Ten years of leading the Third Order from in the shadows, living a sedentary lifestyle of overeating and luxurious assets, softened her muscles considerably and caused her abdomen to balloon out. By the time the Pearian had been located, Hedashield's slow moments and delicate body made her vulnerable to the attacks of Jedi Knights or other enhanced beings. In spite being skilled at telekinetic lightsaber combat, she confessed that she lacked confidence in her ability to physically wield a lightsaber. However, this weakness of hers was ultimately an insignificant one, as she made up for this with her genius intellect, formidable powers, and by always ensuring she was always protected by many henchmen and technological barriers. Additionally, she eventually slimmed down again, making this weakness of hers almost moot.
  • Overconfidence: Xerin Hedashield's other main weakness is her overconfidence and arrogance (stemming from her megalomania and superiority complex). Her arrogance was shown by her considering herself more intelligent and benevolent than anyone else who actually had the will to rule the galaxy given the chance, and therefore worthy of the task. She also told Kristen she had always been more stupid, dull, and unattractive than she was.

Possessions[]

  • Lightsaber: Xerin Hedashield carried a lightsaber with her during the Conflict of the Numbers. It was inadvertently destroyed by a group of Jedi Knights during the Battle of Mustafar.
  • Blaster: As a last means of self-defense, Xerin Hedashield kept a blaster under her pillow in her private quarters in the Dark Tower. It was upgraded and modified in illegal ways.
  • Wardrobe: Xerin Hedashield maintained a large wardrobe of extravagant, ornate and in some cases very elaborate outfits and tops throughout her life. As a high schooler on Vrael, her clothes were simpler and considerably more modest, geared more towards practicality than style. However, her outfits, which consisted hugely of crop tops, were ornate and uniquely styled, geared highly towards comfort.
  • Shoes: A pair of house shoes were a comforting item that belonged to Xerin Hedashield. Two tone in color, the embroidered exterior was red in color with black swirls, with its interior, a black. In 139 BBY, the sedentary woman wore her slippers as she reclined in her bedroom, located on Der Erebolten. During this time, she was often visited by Third Order General Gore; her apprentice Darth Mutialatus, and on one occasion, Kristen and B'en'jamin Thorrn.

Friends[]

Omnipotent One[]

"Xerin was so kind, unlike many of the others at her school. Those who knew her are very lucky indeed."
―The Omnipotent One[src]

It is unknown how Xerin Hedashield felt about fellow school student the Omnipotent One, but she made him a complex antidote when he was feeling ill. While he was fond of her, he had no idea she was behind the Third Order.

Vlaire[]

During her junior high education, Xerin befriended a girl named Vlaire, a girl who, like her, was ambitious and was good at projecting a "sweet little girl" facade. The two became the best of friends. She came to love Xerin with a passion, and while she appreciated Vlaire in turn, she felt no real emotional attachment to her. The two spent a lot of time together and enjoyed initiating numerous "nasty incidents" that happened throughout their time at school that the authorities were never completely able to link to them. The two sadly bade each other goodbye after Hedashield fled to Der Erebolten.

B'en'jamin Thorrn[]

Xerin seems to have a peculiar love-hate relationship with Padawan Learner B'en'jamin Thorrn. Xerin first met B'en in a field when she followed them, pretending to be acting on the orders of Master Yoda. The two, along with Kristen, spent a night at Hedashield's apartment, which she concealed as the Third Order's headquarters. Hedashield became very fond of Thorrn during this time. In turn, Thorrn developed a crush on Hedashield, who was one of the few people to voluntarily show him kindness and compassion, to the extent that she even began to call him "Mr. Handsome". The two parted ways, though she later encountered Thorrn during the Skirmish on Coruscant, where Thorrn was horrified to learn who Hedashield really was. On the other hand, she greatly longed to turn him to the Dark side and train him.

Although Hedashield only saw Thorrn twice prior to the Battle of Coruscant, the two formed a legitimate emotional connection in Kristen's absence, bonding over their negative views of the Jedi Order and their shared vendetta against Kristen. During said battle, Thorrn accompanied Hedashield and she tried swaying him to the Dark side to no avail. As a result, she captured him, though this turned out to be the point where Thorrn made a critical decision, as he had been growing distant from Kristen and Jedi Grandmaster Yoda for two completely different reasons, and he was already in love with Hedashield, thinking his encounters with her were some of the best things that ever happened to him. He was also overwhelmed by her mercy and his physical attraction to her. In turn, Hedashield agreed he had every right to be furious regarding his belief that the Jedi had brainwashed him and attempted to warp his destiny, causing him to yearn for her approval instead of Yoda's.

Following the Battle of Coruscant, Hedashield began training him, and he eventually captured Kristen for her, earning her trust as the Pearian had until then proven impossible to imprison by any means. It is clear that Hedashield was emotionally moved by his desire for her and his loyalty. He continued serving her until the Battle of Mustafar.

Apparently, Xerin was the only one who seemed to be able to sway Thorrn's decision one way or another. He respected her knowledge and appreciated her training. Xerin initially defended reciprocating his feelings for her, insisting that their relationship was "a strictly professional partnership", but she quickly began to open up to him. The two began bonding romantically and eventually fell in love, despite being a good thirteen years apart in age. It is said that their relationship was intense and passionate. It is known that the two were sexually involved. Thorrn indeed claimed that he loved her in a girlfriend-like way. It is also worth noting that despite having little regard for flattery, they still give each other affectionate compliments that they both take seriously betwixt them both. Hedashield would always speak to Thorrn with her mind before either of them made an important decision. This level of cooperation and consideration for each other indicates that Thorrn works very well with the Supreme Leader. Thorrn initially considered her a benevolent caretaker and she initially considered him a very handsome and potent ally, but their desires to get things out of each other eventually turned into genuine love and romantic affection for each other. Hedashield was heartbroken when he betrayed her, which weighed on him despite knowing he had finally done something right.

Perhaps a major reason they bonded together so quickly was that they had a lot in common. Both of them wanted to fix the organization they hailed from (the Republic and the Jedi), which they blamed for permanently separating them from their parents, and destroy it if it proved irreparable. In addition, both Hedashield and Thorrn progressed quickly in their educations and despite being well known for their brilliance preferred to be self-taught. Both of them were curious about the Dark side of the Force and relished the chance to begin using it. Both of them felt lonely and friendless and unable to trust anyone, apart from each other. Neither of them got along with Darth Mutialatus and tolerated him knowing they were in it together. Both of them pretended to be neutral about killing when they were actually haunted by the lives they claimed and took no pleasure in taking future lives, despite agreeing it was inevitable they would have no choice. Hedashield may have seen him as a loving and trustworthy friend who shared the same hatred for the Jedi Order as she had for the ancient religion. The only thing that differs between Hedashield and Thorrn's attitudes towards the Jedi Order is murder; Hedashield uncharacteristically enjoyed murdering a batallion of one hundred Jedi Knights, while Thorrn did not murder any Jedi.

However, there were differences between Hedashield and Thorrn. Hedashield had always considered Kristen a grave threat to her devices and wanted her either dead or converted to evil, preferably the latter, very badly. Thorrn, on the other hand, loved Kristen almost immediately after meeting her, which was a major reason he realized what the Third Order was destined to bring about and defected. Another difference was that while Thorrn was an active adolescent who never ignored a chance to take physically demanding matters into his own hands, Hedashield was a sedentary woman who preferred to let others do her dirty work.

Third Order members[]

Those who served the Third Order followed Xerin Hedashield, fighting as the upper echelon of her army during the Conflict of the Numbers. However, Hedashield did not take kindly to failure or disloyalty from her servants, and she made sure those who had failed to carry out important tasks paid the price.

It is unclear if she truly valued them or was merely using them, but Hedashield knew almost all of her followers were loyal entirely to the cause, not to the woman herself, as the few members in which she placed any genuine trust were Darth Mutialatus and Yaxa though, as time passed, she lost trust in them due to constant failures or wavering trust. The one member of the Third Order she appeared to trust unconditionally was B'en'jamin Thorrn. Hedashield greatly appreciated his loyalty.

Some of Hedashield's known followers were Marion, General Gore, Captain Cole, the Captain, and Lieutenant Juliah.

Darth Mutialatus[]

"In you, I saw such promise. And yet, you have proved to me that you have been severely overestimated. [...] You allowed it. Two little children slipped through your fingers!"
―Xerin[src]

Darth Mutialatus was the apprentice of Xerin Hedashield and, as a result, her most loyal and trusted follower. He held a deep respect for his mistress and listened to her teachings closely. She considered him of great importance, believing that he was destined for greatness beyond imagining. However, upon the escapes of Kristen and of B'en'jamin Thorrn, Hedashield was infuriated and began rethinking her apprentice's future, planning to change his purpose or kill him due to his instability. Hedashield's faith in her apprentice was irreparably damaged, and the young woman began to see Mutialatus as little more than an instrument, calling him a wannabe galactic overlord.

It would seem Xerin was particularly brutal towards him, as she felt threatened by his connection to the Dark side of the Force, which no other known Third Order individuals possessed, and clearly had to take extreme measures to remain the alpha in their relationship.

"Understandably, she just sees him as another well-trained cadet. She's genuinely surprised when she realizes that ever since they met in person, he has celebrated her and identified as a great acolyte of the Supreme Leader, having admired her for a long time."
―D. Isaac Thomas[src]

Captain Cole[]

"I like you, Cole. Do not let me down."
―Xerin to Cole[src]

Xerin initially was good friends with Captain Cole, captain of the Third Order, since he viewed her as his best bet to become a Sith Lord. Whether Xerin knew this is unknown, though unlikely. The two of them shared similar ideologies. While Hedashield continued to trust and possibly even like Cole, Cole realized just how barbaric the Third Order was and decided that he didn't want to serve her anymore, instead opting to claim her life to stop all that she would do. He pretended to remain loyal, however, as he later told B'en'jamin Thorrn that quitting the Order was not an option in his eyes. Though she claimed she regretted the necessity of Cole's death at the hands of Darth Mutialatus, Xerin showed neither sadness nor concern for the loss of Cole's life. Curiously, she had the false impression that Cole realized Darth Mutialatus may have intended on overthrowing her someday, and based on that assumption, betrayed her and sought to take her life in order to impress her right-hand man.

The Captain[]

Xerin had a good relationship with Captain Cole's successor, known only as "the Captain". The two of them agreed on practically everything. He eventually admitted to her that he thought he owed her a great debt since she had saved his life once, confusing her as she did not believe there was a debt to be paid. Despite this, he continued serving her cause. There was no crime he was unwilling to commit if that could allow him to assist Hedashield. He proved key to the survival of the cause and was willing to do anything to see its goals accomplished. The Captain would do anything he possibly could to serve and please Xerin. Xerin, ever appreciative of genuine loyalty to her, trusted him enough to protect her during the Battle of Mustafar. Given that he put up an excellent fight despite ultimately being defeated, it can be assumed Xerin was proud of him posthumously. However, she may have also been frustrated because he nearly got her killed in his final attempt on Yoda's life.

Kristen

Kristen, her mortal enemy

Xerin and Kristen have been enemies ever since Kristen turned up in the Star Wars galaxy. Hedashield is very convinced of her power, believing even she does not know it. Initially, she was interested in turning Kristen to the Dark Side of the Force, but eventually became disenchanted with her. Viewing her loyalty to the Jedi Order as "shortsighted and ultimately unbreakable", Hedashield wanted her dead very badly and in so doing, wipe out the fabled Pearian once and for all.

Behind the scenes[]

From the beginning of the writing process, D. Isaac Thomas knew he didn't want the character who would ultimately become the antagonist of the Across the Portal trilogy to look old and decrepit like Lord Sidious, and when he had the idea to make her female, he realized how unique he could make her compared to other villains from both Star Wars and D.I.T. media. Ultimately, he based both her appearance and personality on early character development for Charity Hirz from Annie and the Blue-Eared Kid of the D.I.T. Literary Universe. He initially planned on making her slender and athletic and have a long history of battle, but he changed his mind when he realized her only weaknesses were moral ones, and he didn't want people thinking her to be a "Mary Sue". He thus opted to make her the opposite: a sedentary woman with an enormous girth, and having never directly been in a real fight prior to the Battle of Coruscant. As a result, Thomas was very careful about how he crafted Xerin Hedashield’s character, from her physical appearance to the way she moved during fights. He made it a fervent priority to make her just pretty enough to get the nod of approval from teenage boys, as it befitted her strong and feminine personality. He also studied bullfighters, as Thomas wanted Hedashield to emulate “the way a bullfighter can seduce a bull into surrendering to its own death without touching him at all.” In spite of all of this, however, he realized certain scenes simply didn't work at all in Intuition, forcing him to have her slim down after the events of Insurgence.

Xerin Hedashield is widely considered by readers to be one-dimensional and easy to hate in Interference and Insurgence, before becoming a well-developed antagonist in Intuition.

Author's comments[]

“I'd have to say Xerin looks good. I was actually very careful crafting her character, from her physical appearance to the way I described her movements during fights. It'd been a fervent priority of mine to make her just pretty enough to get the nod of approval from teenage boys. Since she's very traumatized and very out of shape, I knew she had a disadvantage to work around, but I hope I succeeded. I have faith I did. Anyway, I also took a look into bullfighting, because to me, Xerin is supposed to emulate the way a bullfighter can seduce a bull into surrendering to its own death without touching him at all. I do believe she has that quality.”
“She's aware of what's gone on, in the respect that even though she was too young to necessarily be around them, she is much aware of prior events. I think it'd be fair to say that she is aware of the past to a great degree.”
“What I think is interesting is her relationship with her allies. She isn't using them, but at the same time she's dismissive of them since she thinks she's the one they're trying to use to get their way with the government. None of them seem loyal to her as a person. Some of them, like Captain Cole, have broken free from her inner circle. He didn't care about her, but he was fanatically loyal to Darth Mutialatus until he realized the extremes the Dark Lord was willing to commit. Others, like Myddd, are loyal solely to the cause but she still likes messing with Xerin by touching her and giving her forced flattery just for the fun of it. Yet others such as Velocity Tox and the Captain celebrate and are the greatest acolytes of Xerin — not the Order, but Xerin herself.”

Trivia[]

  • Although most of her darker side is revealed in the first two books and the rest of her in the third, rendering this perception justified, there are some subtle hints throughout the initial novels that foreshadow her character.
    • Xerin has been isolated for a long time and doesn't know any good jokes. Despite being well known for her charisma, Xerin doesn't seem to understand socially why Kristen looks awkward when she leaves the bathroom in revealing clothing.
    • Xerin is specifically described as keeping her stomach taut when she confronts Darth Mutialatus, which foreshadows her insecurity with her weight caused by Vrean's devastation. It is hinted multiple times that she truly loves B'en as a person.
